Installing Project Mentor for use within Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2 (or later) or Windows Vista. 1) Introduction Within Windows XP Service Pack 2 (XPSP2) and Microsoft Windows Vista (Vista), Microsoft has changed the default security settings to make your PC less susceptible to attack. These settings have implications for ANY software that uses Internet Explorer. We have therefore created two versions of Project Mentor that contain some small technical differences, optimised for use within XPSP2/Vista. 2) Install option (A) - Project Mentor to be accessed ONLY by Internet Explorer If you are unable (or do not wish) to run Project Mentor within the user interface of Microsoft Project 2007, 2003 or 2002, choose install option A. This will install Project Mentor to your C: drive. You will run Project Mentor from your Start menu. You should not encounter any security issues. 3) Install option (B) - Project Mentor to to be accessed within Microsoft Project 2007/2003/2002 Project Mentor has been carefully designed to take advantage of the Project Guide functionality within Microsoft Project 2007/2003/2002. As such, you can switch between Microsoft Project and Project Mentor without leaving the Microsoft Project environment. This option provides a richer and more seamless learning environment than the Internet Explorer option. If you choose install option B, Project Mentor will be installed into a default folder on your C: drive. You should then follow the instructions within the Project_Mentor_MSP.pdf document to integrate Project Mentor within Microsoft Project. Technical considerations for integrating Project Mentor within Microsoft Project: i) The installation process will create a shortcut within the Start menu to run Project Mentor. Ideally, you should only access Project Mentor by using its toolbar within Microsoft Project. If you do use the Start menu shortcut, Project Mentor will start within Internet Explorer. Dependant on your PC's security settings, a warning bar may appear advising you that potentially harmful 'Active Content' could be within Project Mentor. Whilst Project Mentor requires this active content for its running, the content will do no harm to your computer. If you allow the blocked content to run, Project Mentor will run perfectly normally, posing no security issues. If you are unable (or do not wish) to allow blocked content, you will have to use install option A to install a separate version of Project Mentor that will not be blocked. See (iii) below. ii) When you access your Personal Learning Plan (PLP), you will be accessing the internet and passing data to and from a Project Learning server. This is perfectly normal. To enable this within a Microsoft Project environment, the website http://www.jgaconsult.co.uk (where the PLP database is located) needs to be made a trusted site. Instructions on how to do this can be found within the Project_Mentor_MSP.pdf document. If you are unable (or do not wish) to allow the creation of a trusted site, you will have to use install option A to install a separate version of Project Mentor that does not require the creation of a trusted site. See (i) above and (iii) below. iii) If you need to access Project Mentor from both Microsoft Project and Internet Explorer, run both install option A and install option B. This will create two separate versions of Project Mentor on your PC, each within a different folder on your C: drive. You should access the (A) version from the Start menu, and the (B) version from the Microsoft Project toolbar. Either of these versions can be removed without affecting the other. You should note however, that any exercises, lessons or references marked as complete in one version will not be marked in the other version.
